October Reset

October Reset: Aligning Vision, time, and Community

October can feel like the “in-between” month in schools. The back-to-school buzz has worn off, routines have been established (or are still settling), and the holiday stretch is on the horizon. It’s the time when fatigue starts to show—for students, staff, and leaders alike. As a principal, I learned that October is one of the most critical months for sustaining momentum. Without an intentional reset, the long weeks ahead can feel heavier than they should. But when we pause to recalibrate, we create space for renewed energy, stronger culture, and deeper focus on what matters most.

Why reset in october?

  • Preventing burnout before it peaks. Small shifts in October can keep staff from hitting a wall in November.
  • Centering team alignment. This is a moment to revisit the “why” as a community and what is and isn’t working.
  • Protecting joy. A reset holds space for celebration of progress, not just what’s challenging.

4 Ways to reset this month

Reset the Vision -Take time in a staff meeting or newsletter to remind your team of the values and commitments that ground your school. Here is a menu of options that range from low to high intensity. Regardless of the direction taken be sure to:

  • Make it Live – focus on stories and experiences, not just posters and presentations.
  • Model Vulnerability – lean out of perfectionism and show how you’ve reset your alignment in this season
  • Be Action Oriented – Share 1-2 tangible commitments so that reset doesn’t fade
Celebrate Progress – Name the wins you’ve already seen this year. It could be stronger routines, improved attendance, or showing students more agency. Recognition fuels motivation, and October is when people most need the reminder that their efforts are paying off.  The keys to celebration:
  • Make celebrations specific and connected to outcomes/growth
  • Balance public and private recognition
  • Keep the celebration linked to the vision
  • Foster Connection – Intentionally create conditions where people feel seen, valued, and part of something larger than themselves within the school community. This is about more than being friendly or having fun together; it’s about cultivating authentic relationships and trust.  A few leadership tips for fostering connection:
    • Be intentional about mixing people up and holding space for staff to get to connect outside of their usual circles
    • Keep it light and joyful because connection doesn’t always have to be heavy!
    • Model it through transparency and gratitude

Increase Visibility – As the school leader, be intentionally present, accessible, and engaged in daily school life. This is about more than walking in the hallways; it’s showing up in ways that build trust, live school priorities, and remind the team you are in the work with them. During an October Reset, focus on quality over quantity. It’s not about being everywhere, but being in the places that matter most for culture, instruction, and community trust!

The middle of the semester can feel like the hardest stretch when momentum fades, routines wobble, and energy dips. But October is also an invitation: a chance to pause, reset, and re-center around the vision and values that matter most. When leaders take the time to celebrate progress, foster connection, and show up with intention, they set the tone for staff, students, and families to carry forward with clarity and hope. If you’re looking for practical ways to guide your reset, I’ve created a detailed October Reset Checklist with strategies for culture, communication, instruction, leadership teams, and families.

Remember, resets aren’t about doing more; they are about choosing what matters so your community can move forward, always.
