Keeping it positive in the classroom can be a challenge. Sometimes it’s difficult to even recognize moments of positivity in the midst of chaos learning. I’ve heard hat the ratio of positive to negative recognition in the classroom should be around 5 to 1. Sometimes finding the positive when we are always striving for perfection is hard. I don’t want to celebrate a mediocre effort, BUT I also don’t want to “celebrate” negativity, which sometimes happens (don’t judge) in my classroom. I use the word celebrate because I know that students people want recognition, and if I am not narrating the behaviors and habits that are driving my class forward, then I am not setting my scholars up for success. The unintended consequence is a classroom environment that is run by negativity.
I use the one pager below to keep me focused on the plethora of opportunities within my classroom to follow the brightspots! It’s simple and something I hang up in the room for students to use too!
